"That the American Museums fully realize the importance of capturing the interest of the young is amply evident… These little Museum Stories for Children leaflets…perform an invaluable service in child education." These pamphlets "do not merely give information. They endeavor to make the children examine the exhibits for themselves." Museum Journal, Dec. 1924 p.145
Beginning in the 1920s, the Field Museum showed "moving picture entertainments for children” on Saturday mornings during the fall and spring. In connection with these screenings, the Field Museum's Raymond Foundation guide-lecturers produced the Museum Stories for Children pamphlet series which were distributed at these screenings. "Their three-fold purpose was, to supplement the films in the matter of information, to direct children to Museum exhibits related to the subject of the films and to provide the children with a souvenir of their visit to the Institution."
Initially, programs covered a wide variety of Natural History topics, but as time passed each season's program was centered around a specific theme. These thematic leaflets were combined into storybooks which were reissued and offered at the Museum's store; around 17,000 were sold annually. These Saturday morning programs continued into the 1960s.
Most of the stories were initially produced in editions from 2000-3000 leaflets, with 20,000-35,000 children attended the programs annually.
